Summer Camp: Classes & Teachers

Learn about the seven classes that will be offered this summer and the profiles of their teachers below (classes are subject to change).

Cooking Adventure Class

Class Description:

We want to share the joy of cooking with children. We hope they’ll have fun while cooking and learning to cook. They’ll learn cooking basics, such as reading recipes and using measuring cups and spoons, to make some American and ethnic foods.

Instructor: Hae-young Chun, Joyce Jo

Hae-young considers herself a foodie and loves perfecting her recipes!  Formerly a management consultant, she loves spending time with kids and has served in children’s programs at her church in various capacities for many years.

Joyce will teach our camp's cooking class for the first time in 2024. She loves cooking and has cooked for many people at church events. Joyce also has work experience teaching students for college prep courses. She'll be teaching ACT college prep courses on Sundays at Hanaim. 


Adventure with Paper Mache

Class Description:

Students will learn to sculpt, shape, and transform simple materials like newspaper and glue into imaginative works of art.

Instructor: Sungjae Ellen Lee

Ellen is an elementary school teacher at an NYC public school and has taught for many years.  She also has served as a Sunday school teacher at Hanaim Church.  Ellen loves spending time with her husband and three children when not working.  She is excited to have the opportunity to get to know students from the Elmwood Park community.


AI Code with Scratch

Class Description:

Students will learn how AI concepts work using Scratch Programming. Using the Scratch drawing tool and coding platform, they will create projects related to AI, such as face detection, AI- generated images, an AI dice game, and emoji icons.

Instructor: Mihee Kang

Mihee Kang has 18+ years of computer and coding experience. She taught computer science as a high school teacher in South Korea and has been teaching coding in the U.S. for the past ten years.   


STEM Crafts

Class Description:

We have fun STEM craft classes to keep our kids thinking and learning while having creative outlets. Students will make cool objects using everyday household goods or recycled items. They can display their artistic talents while learning about the scientific principles behind these crafts.

Instructor: Jongbin Ym

Jongbin is currently a cloud architect working in the defense industry. He is an engineer with over 30 years of software development experience.


Build Your Website

Class Description:

Students will receive an introduction to building their website using Google Sites. They can use images from the summer camp (ex., craft class) to present their work from other classes or showcase their interests.

Instructor: Hehjun Lim

Hehjun is an honors student at the New Jersey Institute of Technology studying Web and Information Systems. An active student senate member at her school, she is also very passionate about technology and education and has taught STEM classes to elementary students as a volunteer.  


Taekwondo & K-Pop Dance

Class Description:

Students will be trained on Korean Martial Art, Taekwondo, to learn discipline, self-control and perseverance. Taekwondo also improves flexibility, balance, strength, and coordination. Students will also learn trendy K-Pop dance and become an enthusiastic K-Pop dancer!

Instructor: Juyoung Lee

Juyoung is currently a junior in high school. She has a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo and won many awards in the statewide and country wide competitions.  


Sports & Games

Class Description:

Would you like to play lots of fun team sports and games with other kids in the camp? Wear your favorite player’s or team’s jersey or hat!!   

Instructors: Clement Skirpan, Henry Kwon,

Clement has an extensive coaching experience with children’s sports programs in Garfield. For the Boys and Girls Club of Garfield and the Garfield Little League, he volunteered as an assistant coach for baseball for five years and basketball during the last basketball season. In his university days, Clement was even a founding Marywood University Tennis Team member. He enjoys helping children learn sporting skills they didn’t know they could possess and build upon them into something greater.

Henry is a sports-loving teacher. He loves Philadelphia sports teams (sorry, NY team fans), especially, Philadelphia Sixers, Eagles, and Phillies. He is so excited to play soccer, volleyball, basketball, and some other fun games with you.
